Hewitt residence

Location: Chatham County, NC (2000)

An addition to the existing old farmhouse is not an easy project, do you try to match what is there or do you try to contrast what is there? Carol and Mark had a pretty good idea of the kind of spaces they needed and wanted, the floor plan developed fairly easily, but then the actual roof lines and connection to the existing house were tricky. Old oaks are located on the south side of the house, and we tried to minimize the impact on the roots by finding structural solutions that would not damage them.

The result was a very useful space connected physically to the existing house, yet able to be closed off and provide privacy. It is a sun-tempered solution, since the addition faces south and has the right amount of glazing to make sure space does not overheat, but the floors are wood and there is no additional thermal mass. High quality Pella windows were used and a comfortable deck on the south side completed the project.
